Play & Art Therapy for Children and Teens

How Play & Art Therapy Can Help

Play and art therapy services for children and teens in Springfield, Ohio

Child Play Therapy

Play therapy helps children ages 5–12 express their feelings in a natural way—through play. Since children can’t always put their emotions into words, toys become their “language.” By acting things out, children can safely explore worries, fears, and big feelings, helping them heal and learn new ways to cope.

Play therapists are specially trained to understand child development and use play to support emotional growth. They offer a variety of toys so each child can express themselves in the way that feels most comfortable.

There are different types of child play therapy, and some even involve parents to help strengthen communication and connection at home.

Play and art therapy provide children and adolescents with developmentally appropriate ways to express emotions, process experiences, and build healthy coping skills. Our approach creates a safe, supportive environment where growth and healing can take place.

Art therapy

Art therapy gives adolescents a creative outlet to process emotions and build confidence through creating.

Art therapy is a form of counseling that uses creativity—such as drawing, painting, needle felting or working with clay—to help teens express thoughts and feelings they may not have words for. It offers a safe, calm space where adolescents can explore emotions, build confidence, reduce stress, and work through challenges. The focus isn’t on being “good” at art; it’s about using creative expression to support emotional growth, self-awareness, and healthy coping skills.

For parents and caregivers:
When a child is involved in counseling, parents play an important role in the process. The initial appointment typically includes time to gather background information, discuss concerns, and answer questions. Ongoing parent involvement may include periodic check-ins, guidance, and collaboration to support your child’s growth both in and outside of sessions.

If you have questions about whether play or art therapy may be a good fit for your child or teen, we’re happy to help.
